ABOUT ARC

HOW IT STARTED

Rhulinabo Hamuli lived as refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo in the urban neighborhood of Makindye in Kampala/Uganda. After living the everyday struggle and observing the same of their peers, they decided to rise up and make a change in their community.

In December, 25th,2016, Activity Return to the Community (ARC) was founded with the hope that all refugees living in Kampala can make a great impact in their communities and live successful lives despite the challenges of being refugees. With only one group of saving and a passion to “be the change,” Rhulinabo hosted their first event uniting refugees from Congo, Rwanda, Somolia and Burundi on the meeting in Makindye. This is where they started discussing issues related to their lives, offering motivational speeches, and communicating hope to improve the lives of refugees in Kampala. The saving program grew quickly, and many refugees expressed their challenges with communicating in English. Next, Rhulinabo opened free English classes in a space offered by the Zion Church, where hundreds of young men and women refugees joined. Activity Return to the Community (ARC)programs grew rapidly as community needs arose.

In May,17th,2018, Modeste kabene,Abarikiwe Daniel,Ushindi Muhindo Victor , Furaha Binowa and Bonheur Kabuzi also a refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, joined Rhulinabo and Ushindi's efforts and helped bring the vision of ARC to life. Ushindi and Rhulinabo invited them to join the Organization as co-founders and together they built ARC Empowerment in Uganda. The team grew with committed volunteers, including local Ugandans and other refugees, who joined ARC to contribute to the mission to serve refugees.
Today, 8years later, ARC is one of the best-known refugee-run organizations in Uganda with 25 employees (60% Refugees and 40% Nationals and 50% men & 50% women on staff).
